The fundamental goal of the Academy of Economic Studies of Bucharest is to educate future economists, to carry out continuous education programmes as well as scientific research.
The Academy of Economic Studies of Bucharest is and intends to remain the most prestigious institution of tertiary economic and public administration education in Romania and to rank among the leading universities in Europe, due to the content and topicality of its learning processes, its innovation, dynamism, and its involvement, through strategic partnership relationships, in the national and international economic environment.
The new structure of the education respect the Bologna Declaration principles is to be applied starting with the academic year 2005/2006.
The first cycle - leading to the new degree of Bachelor in Economics - aims to providing a large number of students with basic theoretical knowledge in each specialization. The initial education is intended to be wide enough so as to provide a solid basis of essential knowledge whereon numerous specialized master programmes can be developed. On the other hand, the level of skills and competencies required in the labour market shall be ensured, so that graduates of the first cycle can be immediately employed in an executive position, if they so desire. By law, a three-year graduation diploma is equivalent to the four-year one.
The second cycle - conducing to a Master's degree - is to ensure narrow specializations, providing advanced knowledge and analytical and synthesizing skills specific to executive positions in every field. Studying advanced knowledge subjects within the chosen specialization and carrying out scientific research are the main ways in which the Master's degree distinguishes its graduates from those having chosen to end their initial education with a Bachelor's degree. In addition to the above-mentioned Master's programme, the university can also decide to offer MBA or Executive MBAMaster-type programmes.
The third cycle aims at educating the scientific élite of economists within the doctoral schools and is addressed to the best graduates of the Master's cycle.
This academic year we are having 40,000 students enrolled, out of whom 17,000 in distance learning, 2,078 doctoral students, 7,000 attending various postgraduate courses, including Master's programmes. In order to bring our offer as close as possible to its beneficiaries, we have set up 16 territorial centres located in various areas of the country.
As to the academic staff, it includes 950 full-time, highly qualified members, out of whom 379 professors and readers and 428 under the age of 35.
